Eye Health Exams That Exceed Expectations

You probably think that eye exams are only for people who need glasses, but the truth is everyone needs regular eye exams. Although it’s obviously important to make sure your eyes are seeing clearly, that’s not all an eye exam does.

Many sight limiting eye diseases like glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration cause slow but permanent damage without any obvious symptoms. Regular eye exams allow us to detect any minor changes to your vision and catch any early signs of disease.

How an Eye Health Exam Works

Vision Testing

Regular vision testing and evaluations make sure you have the clearest vision possible. Our Optometrists will measure how well each eye sees by using a wall chart and a reading chart. The results of these tests are represented by a fraction, with 20/20 being the average. Depending on the results of your vision test, the Optometrist assessing you may prescribe corrective glasses, contacts, or eye exercises.

Eye Function Testing

Our Optometrists will perform several tests to evaluate your depth perception, color vision, eye muscle strength, peripheral vision, and eye muscle responsiveness. These simple tests help us make sure your eyes are focusing, moving, and working together properly. Once we have the results, we’ll be able to diagnose any underlying conditions that may be impairing your eyes’ ability to focus or work together.

Ocular Health Exam

Now that we’ve tested your vision and eye function, it’s time to make sure your eyes are structurally healthy. Our team will inspect your eyes and eyelids using a microscope called a slit lamp and a bright light. We may also dilate your pupils to give us a better internal view of your eyes. We use a process called non-contact tonometry or contact tonometry to measure eye pressure and to rule out glaucoma. After completing all of these tests, your Optometrist will review the results and go over any questions or concerns you might have.
