Conestoga Eye Care provides innovative eye care services to patients from in and around Waterloo. We offer comprehensive eye health assessments, ocular disease diagnosis and treatment, contact lens evaluation and fitting, and prescriptions.

Dr. Ali Hussen, O. D.

Dr. Ali Hussen, O. D.

Dr. Ali Hussen has been practicing optometry since 2007. Over the past six years Dr. Hussen has seen over 40,000 patients and has gained this experience through working at the busiest optometry practice in Canada. Working in this environment has allowed Dr. Hussen to gain a broad range of experience with a variety of patients including: children ages 6 months and up, patients with special needs, adults, and the elderly. These patients presented a number of conditions including (but not limited to) cataracts, macular degeneration, corneal abrasions, and glaucoma. Dr. Hussen has obtained board certification to treat and manage ocular diseases and has referred a number of high risk cases to the appropriate specialists resulting in successful outcomes for his patients.

Dr. Ali Hussen was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. He attended the University of Waterloo where he earned a Bachelors degree in Science in 2003 and completed his Doctorate of Optometry with Honours in 2007 at the New England College of Optometry in Boston, Massachusetts. As part of his specialty clinical training, Dr. Hussen completed an ocular disease externship at the Portland Veterans Affairs Hospital in Oregon. Dr. Hussen also has extensive training in hospital based optometry including co-management of pre- and post- cataract assessments, trauma, emergency ocular care, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and glaucoma. In addition, Dr. Hussen completed training in family care and contact lens fittings at the Newport Navy Base in Rhode Island and has experience in paediatric eye care, specializing in Amblyopia (lazy eye) treatment, from the Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center in Boston.

Dr. Hussen is passionate about giving back to the local and global community. He has he has volunteered his time to attend several eye care missions through the OneSight organization to provide eye care services to individuals in impoverished regions all over the world. Dr. Hussen has visited Central America, India, South Africa, and Thailand and continues to participate in eye care missions on a yearly basis. Dr. Mariko Hirano, O.D.

Dr. Mariko Hirano, O.D.

Dr. Mariko Hirano has been a proud member of the Kitchener-Waterloo community for many years, having attended the University of Waterloo for her Bachelor of Science in Honours Science, Doctor of Optometry, and Master of Science in Vision Science. She enjoys working with patients of all ages, with special interests in paediatrics, contact lenses, and sports vision. She is a member of the Ontario Association of Optometrists as well as the College of Optometrists of Ontario. 

Over the course of her optometric training, Dr. Hirano has worked in disease-focused practices in Pinellas Park, Florida, as well as primary care practices across the GTA. She has provided eye exams to seniors in long term care facilities as well as in-school visits for children. After completing her Doctor of Optometry degree, Dr. Hirano returned to the University of Waterloo to complete her Masters research on dynamic visual acuity. Her research focused on the effects of different factors on how people perceive moving targets, and methods through which this can be measured in optometric clinics.   

Dr. Hirano is very passionate about patient education. She will happily answer any questions regarding eye health or vision testing, and enjoys keeping up to date with current research in the field of optometry and vision science. She is excited to be providing eye care to the KW community.
